I find myself in a lot of different offices of high tech firms in different parts of the world. Most of the time, they are a variation on the long-corridor-of-similar-offices style or the cube farm.
Cubicles are space efficient and are supposed to enhance collaboration. Because of the uniformity of the space, it’s hard to show much creativity.
I was blown away this month in Tokyo when I saw this complete and functional model train layout on the top of the cube walls in one office area.
Here we have tracks winding over the landscape from one office to the next:
A group of filing cabinets become a switching yard:
Very cool – bridges, loops, even little scale model buildings:
Who says cubicles have to be boring?
